Learning Outcome 2

In my final draft of the Chosen Work Sample, my project three essay Teens and Technology: Taking a Step Back, I was able to find sources used as evidence in my paper to support my thesis. Reading through my peers’ work and then using it in my personal essay was a great experience. It was fun to read through and pick out the best quotes, especially from a smaller article, opposed to a longer 5-6 page article. A specific example is how I used this quote from Peyton Perkins in her article Where Did We Go Wrong? “We are in a constant state of ‘where is my phone?’ Feeling uncomfortable in the elevator; check your phone. Nervous before an interview; check your phone. We want to access technology not necessarily because it is helpful, but because we have made it an extension of who we are”(Perkins). This quote was used to support my idea that parents were so critical and scared about technology being around their children when it was in early development, and they were absolutely right to be. They were right because of the feelings that Perkins explains to her readers, describing her phone as a literal extension of herself, like a limb almost. I carefully selected this quote because it blended well with my quote from Turkle that I analyzed previously in the same paragraph in my essay. I felt that I did a great job explaining the quote using meta commentary and my own personal experience as well. In class we discussed the topic of meta commentary which truly opened my eyes. I made sure to include that in my third project, especially after project two when there was confusion in my blatant sentences. Making sure to bring my point across strongly and concisely is important to me, and meta commentary helped a lot.
